"Hi!" to everyone who stopped by my table to look at my art or took a business card.
"Thank you soooooo~ much," to those who actually bought something.
Yes, it was my first year with a table in the Artist's Alley. I was so nervous, and for a while I was wondering if anyone would buy any of my stuff at all, but I did a lot better than I thought I would.
The trip started off pretty awfully, actually. We were stopped at the border for three hours, while the border guard bumbled around. He told us right away that I wouldn't be allowed to sell my stuff, (even with the proper Temp Business Liscence of Washington State) because I was stealing business from Americans.
This just seems really pathetic, because if someone wants to buy my artwork over an American's, then it means they like mine better. To not allow me to sell seems like cowardice.
Plus, there were other Canadians in the Artist Alley who didn't have any trouble coming down, and I know that plenty of Americans come up for the Canadian cons.
Anyway, they told us right from the start that we wouldn't be allowed to cross, then he went away for an hour. Occasionally he'd come back to ask us something, and then finally he came to take my fingerprints and mugshot... God knows why, since we didn't do anything wrong. It took him half an hour to figure out how to even use the god damn equipment.
Finally, after three hours we were turned back. Luckily, Brian (neko-bri-bri) lived fairly close to the border and we were allowed to go drop all my stuff off at his house. What's most frustrating is that I spent the past three months making hats and coloring books.
Luckily though, I have an awsome mother. I'll get to that in a second, but I have to say, our first night there (Thursday) our hotel was held up by an armed robber. My mom had been outside smoking at the time, and it was fairly late. She ended up getting interviewed by three TV stations, and people recognized her at the con. XD
She's awsome because, the very next morning, she went out and bought a printer and many other things. She had all my prints on her laptop, and we were able to get a lot of stuff together.
Anyways, all in all it was a lot of fun. I was constantly busy working on commisions, which was a huge ego stroking when I had been worried that I wouldn't sell anything. I managed to make money at least as fast as I was spending it.
Oddly enough, I didn't feel bad about having to spend four hours a day, drawing at a table in a corner of the dealers room. I think I normally would have spent at least that much time in there anyway, looking around for stuff to waste money on.
In the end my boyfriend insisted that I take a break, and go buy some porn, because it was abnormal for me to work so hard.
I also want to thank him, because he was at the table with me the entire time, dealing with the money, and selling things while I was busy drawing, and just generally chatting up the people that walked by. Apparantly, I didn't even notice, but he stopped a number of people from taking pictures of my artwork as well.
Thank you, thank you all. It was a lot of fun.
On a side note, the latest picture in my favourites was drawn by me. It was one of the commisions I sold at the con. The scan isn't very good quality, but it's quite large so I'm going to see if I can clean it up and add it to my own gallary.
